First net job loss in four years. The U.S. economy lost 4,000 jobs in August, news that surprised analysts and sent stocks plunging and treasuries soaring. Economists polled had expected payrolls to swell by 110,000 jobs last month. The first such decline since August 2003 puts more pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. "Clearly the economy is struggling, and this is the kind of evidence that really makes a strong case for a Fed easing move," ClearView Economics president Ken Mayland observed. The new Labor Department data also showed unemployment flat for August (4.6%) and wages up 0.3% . . . Full Article

The month in brief. Thanks to the Federal Reserves intervention, August was not as bad as it could have been. Believe it or not, after all the ups and downs, it was practically a flat month. Bernanke & Bush speak, stocks gain. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Friday that the Fed "would act as needed to limit the adverse effects on the broader economy that may arise from the disruptions in financial markets." Analysts saw his remark as a signal for an interest rate cut. Also Friday, President Bush said he would let the Federal Housing Administration guarantee loans for delinquent borrowers, and let homeowners with subprime loans refinance through a new program, FHA Secure. "The governments got a role to play," he noted, adding that "its not the governments job to bail out speculators." The big indexes posted gains before and after these remarks; the Dow gained 119 points on the day . . . Full Article

Fed lifts lending limits for 2 banks. On late Friday afternoon, the Federal Reserve revealed a Monday decision to momentarily exempt Citigroup and Bank of America from rules technically restricting the amount of lending to their brokerage affiliates, Citigroup Global Markets and Banc of America Securities. Documents posted on the Fedfs website Friday noted that both banks had requested the exemptions in order to provide added liquidity to holders of mortgage loans and mortgage]backed securities. The Fed says it acted in the public interest, seeking to help the banks conduct business in "the most rapid and cost-effective manner possible." . . . Full Article
